Why clients keep coming back

Fixed-scope engagements
Every project starts with a written scope and a flat fee. No hourly billing surprises, no scope creep invoices. You know the number before we start.
Plain-language deliverables
Our reports are written for the people who will act on them, not for a boardroom shelf. Bullet points, clear next steps, no consultant jargon.
No retainer required
We do not lock you into a rolling monthly contract. Engage us for a specific project, then decide whether you want more. That is the whole model.

Fixed-fee IT consulting: what it means in practice

The phrase 'fixed fee' appears on a lot of consulting websites. What it means in practice varies considerably. Some firms quote a fixed fee for a discovery phase and then bill hourly for everything after. Others fix the fee but leave the scope vague enough that almost any additional request becomes a billable extra. This article explains how a genuine fixed-fee model works, what you should expect from it, and how to tell the difference between a real flat fee and one that is fixed in name only.

How to get real value from a technology roadmap review

A technology roadmap review is one of the most commonly requested consulting engagements and one of the most commonly delivered badly. The output is often a large document that accurately describes the current state of a technology environment but says very little about what to do next, in what order, or why. This guide explains what a useful roadmap review actually contains and how to tell whether the one you are commissioning will be worth the investment.

What a digital transformation audit actually covers

The term 'digital transformation audit' is used to describe several activities, from a brief technology review to a months-long organisational assessment. This article explains what a well-structured audit covers, who should be involved, how long it should take for a mid-sized organisation, and what the output should tell you that you did not already know.

Marcus Ellery

Marcus Ellery founded CoreTech PathWave in 2017 after eleven years at two large technology consultancies, where he led digital transformation programmes for financial services and logistics clients. Before going independent, he spent three years as a principal consultant at Meridian Advisory Group, where he managed a portfolio of eight concurrent client accounts. He holds a postgraduate certificate in IT governance from the Chartered Institute for IT. Outside work, he runs a weekly five-kilometre parkrun and has completed the Coast to Coast walk twice. He reads every client deliverable before it leaves the building, which his associates find either reassuring or exhausting depending on the day.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01

Is the fee really fixed? What if the project runs over?

Yes, it is fixed. If we underestimate the scope, that is our problem, not yours. The only time a fee changes is if you ask us to add something that was not in the original written scope, and even then we quote the addition separately before doing any extra work. We have never issued a surprise invoice.

Q02

Do I need to sign a long-term retainer?

No. Every engagement is project-based with a defined start and end. When the work is done, the contract is done. Some clients come back for a second or third project, which we are always glad about, but there is no obligation and no rolling monthly fee.

Q03

Who actually does the work?

Marcus Ellery leads every client relationship and is the primary consultant on every engagement. Depending on the scope, he may bring in one or two associates from the network for specific technical areas, such as cloud architecture or data governance. You will always know who is working on your project before we start.

Q04

How quickly can you start?

For most engagements, we can begin within two to three weeks of signing. If you have a more urgent situation, such as an interim leadership need or a vendor decision with a hard deadline, contact us directly and we will tell you honestly whether we can accommodate it.

Q05

Do you work with businesses outside the UK?

Yes. We have worked with clients in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Germany. Remote engagements work well for most of our service types. For audits and interim leadership roles, we discuss travel arrangements as part of the scoping conversation.
